• Kate Garraway has said that "life-threatening" sepsis was the cause of her husband's recent hospitalisation.After a three-week hiatus, the 55-year-old TV anchor returned to Good Morning Britain and gave co-host Richard Madeley an explanation of why she had "dramatically departed."

In March 2020, Derek Draper, a 54-year-old former political strategist, developed a terrible coronavirus infection. Although he is now well, he still needs daily care because the virus has permanently damaged his organs.

"I spectacularly vanished and haven't been here in three weeks," Garraway said to Madeley. Derek, who has been in and out of the hospital for some time in order to investigate methods to address the harm caused by Covid back in 2020, had just returned as we went on the air.

But before he became very ill, we hadn't really had any medical outbreaks of any kind.

He had just left the hospital the day before, so when the person caring for him called me to say, "okay, we're very scared," I hurried home and things just sort of went "boom" from there.

Garraway claimed that once Draper was rushed to the hospital, doctors there found that he had "extremely serious sepsis, life-threatening sepsis."

When the body overreacts to an infection and begins to harm its own tissues and organs, sepsis results. It is famously difficult to identify and dangerous.

"So it was really dramatic," said Garraway. "Amazing work by the A&E," he said, "truly remarkable because (identifying) the source of infection immediately and obtaining the right medications when his blood pressure was so low is the main concern when you have sepsis."

A younger doctor asked her what she believed the reason may be, and she said that it could be a urinary infection after explaining how she arrived at that conclusion through a "series of eliminations and questioning."

I did wonder whether it was a urinary infection, but strangely, we were unable to gather anything for a sample, and they instantly stated "kidneys," she added. Covid-19 then excluded her spouse once more.

And it was one of those queries like, 'what was in your mind?' that was so distinct from all the technical. When I mentioned that, they all turned to look at each other and replied, "Kidneys." Sadly, his kidneys were severely inflamed and clogged.

We've spent the previous three weeks working to rescue them since that is the current difficulty.

He is still in the hospital, not in critical care, awaiting another treatment, and he is in excellent physical condition.

He is still in a high dependency unit, the doctor added, "fingers crossed on everything, and especially one kidney looking really well, only need to check at the other one."

It's not completely clear why he suddenly got this, although Garraway speculated that it may be related to Covid. We must instantly cross back over to the correct side of it.

Prior to her comeback to television on Monday, the Smooth Radio host thanked Draper's critical care nurses, the NHS, as well as her supporters in an Instagram post on Sunday.

For the documentary Finding Derek, which chronicled her family's experience during the epidemic, Garraway earned an award at the National Television Awards the previous year.

The follow-up documentary, Kate Garraway: Caring for Derek, which debuted on YT GOOD  in February of this year, followed Garraway as she handled the "myriad problems of the social care. Darcey and Billy are the couple's two children, and they were married in 2005.

Draper's fight against the virus has garnered a lot of interest and support, notably from the royal family and Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
