Pakistan Army Helicopter Crash

The Pakistani army announced on Monday that a chopper carrying top military officials, including a three-star general, went missing in southwest Pakistan.

During flood relief efforts in the southwest Balochistan province, which has been severely affected by torrential rains and flash floods, the officers—among them Corps Commander Quetta Lt. Gen. Sarfraz Ahmad—lost touch with the air traffic control.

"While conducting flood relief operations in Lasbela, Balochistan, a Pakistani army aviation chopper lost communication with ATC. There were six people on board, including Commander 12 Corps, who was in charge of overseeing flood relief efforts in Balochistan "According to a statement from the army's press office.

The missing helicopter is being sought after, it was noted.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations, on Monday, a Pakistan Army helicopter carrying six persons, including Commander 12 Corps Lieutenant General Sarfraz Ali, lost touch with air traffic control in the Lasbela area of Baluchistan.

According to a statement from the military's public affairs branch, the helicopter was supporting flood efforts in the area.

The ISPR reported that "a Pakistan army aviation helicopter lost touch with ATC while conducting flood relief operations in Lasbela, Balochistan."

A search effort was in progress, it added, and "Six people were on board including Commander 12 Corps who was directing flood relief activities in Balochistan."

Following devastating floods that left at least 132 dead, the Pakistan Army, Frontier Corps, and Pakistan Navy have been undertaking rescue efforts in the region.

The most recent PDMA report claims that floods disconnected Lasbela and Sindh by washing away a number of highways and bridges.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also met with locals earlier in the day at a number of flood-affected Balochistan communities, including Qilla Saifullah, Chaman, and Quetta.

Over the last week, monsoon rains have pounded Pakistan and caused flash floods that have killed hundreds of people. With the most recent death toll of 140, Pakistan has now seen 478 rain-related fatalities since June.

The military has been removing thousands of marooned individuals from the Balochistan province, one of the flood-affected areas, since last week. Choppers have been sent out by the Pakistani authorities to assist in the rescue efforts.
